North Korea operates on its own time zone called “Pyongyang Time,” which is 30 minutes behind South Korea and Japan. This time zone was established in 2015 as a move to break away from the time set during Japanese colonial rule.
North Korea is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a public Internet. Instead, they have an intranet called “Kwangmyong,” which provides access to state-approved websites and content.
The country has a unique calendar system called the Juche calendar, introduced in 1997. The calendar starts from the birth year of Kim Il-sung, the founder of North Korea, which corresponds to 1912 in the Gregorian calendar. Thus, the year 2023 would be Juche 112 in North Korea.
North Korea is home to the world’s largest stadium by seating capacity. The Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, located in Pyongyang, can accommodate approximately 114,000 spectators and is primarily used for soccer and mass games that include elaborate choreographed performances.
The Arirang Mass Games, held in North Korea, are among the largest and most elaborate synchronized performances in the world. The event involves tens of thousands of participants and serves as a display of national unity and artistic expression, often featuring large mosaic pictures created by thousands of individual cards held up by performers.
