Rhino Weight: How much do rhinos weigh?

Rhinoceros or Rhinos, translated into the greek language as “the nose-horned”, is one of the largest land animal and terrestrial mammal in the world that is native to some parts of Africa and Southern Asia.

Some species of rhinoceros are only behind the three extant species of elephants as the worlds heaviest and largest megafauna around, with most species capable of reaching or exceeding one tonne figure in total body mass.

Rhinoceros are herbivores that feed mainly on grasses, leaves, plant materials and foliages and are adapted to using their teeth or tough upper lips to cut grasses and pluck food, depending on species.

In this article, we are going to be discussing the range masses of the different species groups that rhinoceros are spread into.

We’ll also be discussing about the weight of the different subspecies within each specie group (if existent), the weight of their newly born calf, their horns, their heads, and also the weight of their brains.

How much do rhinos weigh in kg, pounds and tons?

All rhinoceros extant today belong to either of the five groups mentioned below:

  1. White rhinoceros.
  2. Black rhinoceros.
  3. Indian rhinoceros.
  4. Javan rhinoceros.
  5. Sumatran rhinoceros.

The first two species: the white and the black rhinoceros, are grouped together as African rhinoceros, because they inhabit the savanna regions, shrubby regions, dense forests and other open areas of the African continent, south of the sahara.

The Indian and Javan species belong to the Rhinocerotini group, while the Sumatran species is the most primitive of the two and inhabits a separate group of its own called the Dicerorhinini.

All three species apart from the african rhinoceros are found wide spread within the landmasses of South-Central Asia.

The five distinct species mentioned above can vary to some extent in appearance, external morphology, feeding and general behaviour and also in the habitat areas they prefer within their respective geographical range.

The average weigh of a rhinoceros (regardless of species)

  • The average weight of a rhinoceros is 1600 kg, 3528 pounds.
  • The average weight of a male rhinoceros is 2000 kg, 4410 pounds.
  • The average weight of a female rhinoceros is 1400 kg, 3087 pounds.

Below, we give a more detailed breakdown of the weight of the different species and subspecies of rhinoceros.

How much do white rhinoceros weigh in kg, pounds and tons?

White rhinoceros, Burchell’s rhinoceros, or Oswell’s rhinoceros have range that extends throughout Southern africa and zambia: with the highest concentration found in south Africa (99.9 %).

The white rhinoceros doesn’t actually have a white-pigmented skin but rather a color ranging from yellowish brown to slaye grey. They often inhabit the grassland and savanna regions of their modal range.

White rhinoceros are the largest of the five living species of rhinoceros in the world and arguably hold the record for the second largest and heaviest land animal after the three species of elephants.

The hippopotamus and other species of rhinoceros like the black and indian rhinos share third position.

White rhinoceros form the largest and most abundant extant species of rhinoceros in the world and also have the most abundant subspecies (the southern rhinos).

They are sub-divided into two subspecies which include the:
